Finally, Toshiba includes a good software bundle. Besides the utilities already mentioned, you get a hard-drive protection utility to prevent nasty head crashes in the event of minor accidents. Toshiba’s ConfigFree network and communications utility makes it a snap to set up and troubleshoot wired and wireless problems. Third party software includes Microsoft Works 9, Corel DVD MovieFactory, Cyberlink PowerCinema, and a Toshiba-branded DVD player, Toshiba PA3399U-1BRS Battery , all of which should cover most basic computing and media tasks.
Despite the awkward battery placement and only fair benchmark scores, the U505 is a good value if you want a general workhorse computer with good media capabilities, a great keyboard, and a reasonably long Compaq Presario V3000 Battery life.
The laptop battery is plentifully supplied with the kinds of ports, connections, and other features that you might expect of a better-than-average entertainment portable. Chief among them are an HD DVD player, a built-in Webcam, and an HDMI port for connecting a plasma screen. The generous nonmultimedia features include a gaggle of USB ports–six in all–and a keyboard with several nice extras. One is a dedicated number pad; another is Toshiba’s unique dual-mode touchpad, which you can switch to a set of virtual quick-launch buttons with the tap of a finger in the upper-right corner. Microsoft Works 8.5 rounds out the offering.
Toshiba sent us the Toshiba PA3384U-1BRS Battery, which has a current MSRP, or list price, of $1399. This midlevel configuration for the A605 packs a 1.4GHz Intel Core 2 Duo SU9400 processor, 3GB of 333MHz DDR2 RAM, a DVD-RW drive, integrated graphics from Intel, and a 300GB hard drive with a 32-bit version of Vista Home Premium. In fact, the hardware isn’t all that different from what we saw in Toshiba’s Portege R600. But the latter, a higher-end machine, sells for about $700 more, yet scores almost the same as the A605 in performance tests.
